Macland’s Progress: Mission Trip to Inner City Mobile

Twenty of our Macland Road family visited the Mobile, Alabama Inner City Church of Christ for a campaign from June 11 to 16. Campaigners included Shannon, Michael, Jenna, and Brooke Rolen, Jeff, Jameson, Jadyn, and Kenyon Hope, Carla, Emily, and Megan Drumm, Angela Paschal, Griselda Lipscomb, Kendall Waldrop, Kalie Asher (a friend of ours from Chickamauga), Summer Conley, Morgan Dudley, Zakk Burton, and Caleb and Rebekah Colley.

Our campaign centered on all three biblical aspects of the church’s mission (evangelism, edification, and benevolence). There was something for everyone to do, including the following:

  • After worshiping with the Inner City congregation on Sunday, we went to the doors of the R.V. Taylor housing project to greet residents in the name of the Inner City congregation and invite them to a “family night” VBS. We also informed them about an upcoming grocery give-away accompanied by a Bible study—truly an effort to feed both body and soul. The majority of residents were friendly and receptive to learning more about the Lord’s church.
  • In going from door to door, we set up Bible studies with a number of residents, and prayed with many of them. The local preacher, Chuck Griffis, will lead future campaign groups in following up on these contacts as the summer progresses. Conversions often occur as a result of these contacts.
  • We hosted the three-night VBS, which included singing and Bible learning with the neighborhood children. We began teaching them the names of the books of the Bible, a process that will continue throughout the summer as further campaign groups come to Mobile.
  • We did a number of projects at the church building. For example, we cleaned up the yard and planted flowers, replaced damaged ceiling tiles, worked on the building’s security system, and wrote notes of encouragement for struggling members.

Throughout this week of work, we grew to love the brethren at Inner City. We found them to be welcoming and kind, and we enjoyed many pleasant conversations with them over lunch and dinner each day. Those of us from Macland Road also grew closer to one another, and more appreciative of the rich blessings God gives us.

We extend sincere thanks to each member who contributed the food and financial support that made this trip possible.

Why not consider coming on a future Macland mission trip? You will not regret it.
